Swainsona formosa or Sturt’s Desert Pea.

Sturt’s Desert Pea, Swainsona formosa, or if you prefer the indigenous name Ngooringa, is a striking wild flowering plant native to each mainland state of Australia except Victoria.

The flower of Swainsonia formosa is generally a vibrant red with a contrasting black boss (centre). But there are many variations, including a naturally occurring white flower and many natural hybrids ranging from pink to pale reds and even a cream-coloured flower.

The centres also vary in colour from dull reddish browns to deep glossy black. Sturt’s Desert Pea is usually a prostrate plant. However, there are reports of plants growing up to two metres tall in Western Australia.

Flowering from Spring to Summer, the most spectacular occurrences happen after heavy rain. That isn’t a surprise, as this Australian native plant prefers dry inland semi-arid regions.

Swainsona formosa is the floral emblem for South Australia. It has been a favourite of artists and photographers for many years. For tourists who venture into more remote parts of Australia’s inland, spotting large patches of brilliant red flowers in the desert is a joy.

For us, it is a lifestyle choice. Yelta was once a thriving river settlement serving the paddle steamer trade. The town boasted several pubs, accommodation houses and businesses.
Today, Yelta is a collection of residential buildings, farms and work-from-home operations like ours.

What is it we do?

For more than 40 years, Excitations Australia has specialised in creating photographic and video content across southeastern Australia.

While many people know us from our long involvement in wedding and portrait photography, our work has extended far beyond the studio environment. Over the decades, we have supplied photography, film and video services to regional and national news organisations, produced advertising and promotional content for television, newspapers and magazines, and developed extensive stock photo and video collections licensed through agencies and clients both within Australia and internationally.

Today, our focus is increasingly centred on commercial, editorial and stock imagery, along with specialised visual content for media, business and online use.

Alongside our media work, we are also expanding into locally grown horticultural products, including nursery plants, roses, bulbs, seasonal flowers and selected vegetables, supplied primarily to local customers within our region.
